Day 11: Height / Ashbury

It’s day 11 and we’re somehow settling into the neighborhood. Height was apparently the place where the hippie movement started and doesn’t really seem like it has ended yet.

But now – breakfast!

Day 10: Oh my god it’s the Golden Gate!

San Francisco SignI was very happy we were approaching SF from the North. This way we had to cross Golden Gate to get to San Francisco. And to be honest with you, I was actually quite nervous before approaching this immense bridge. I don’t really know why, it just seemed like a great endeavor. Perhaps also because it was such a milestone for our trip.

We have been traveling by car for over a week, going 3283 km (2043 miles), and now we are approaching our destination. Perhaps the Golden Gate somehow just became a great symbol of “no return” for us? I don’t know, but as we approached it, we weren’t disappointed.

The immense bridge lay in a fast moving cloud of mystery, and it seemed like the temperature gauge dropped by the meter. From the hot territory of Sonoma just north of San Francisco, it was now 20°C lower, clicking in at 15° while we were going across the bridge! Wo0t!?

Day 10: Going to San Francisco!

It is day 10, and we are going to San Francisco! Looking forward to it. The wine district of healdsburg is intensely hot at a temperature of 35°C. The warning signs of San Francisco being a little cooler suddenly seems perfect for us.

Day 6: And then – the Coast

From we set off from Salt Lake City, we had the immense flatlands of Utah, the national parks of Great Teton and Yellowstone in Wyoming, the beautiful Sawtooth mountains of Idaho and the badlands of east Oregon.

And then – after hour after hour traveling through the landscape of nothingness – there it was; the west coast. The end of the great US.

Cold coast

And then came the coast, and with it – the wind and the cold!? Not that we hadn’t done our temperature research; (we even had 1st hand information that people were wearing ‘winter jackets’ in San Francisco in the mid of July?!), but to be honest, we had difficulties understanding it. California is supposed to be the Sunshine State, right?

From the intense 35°C (95°F) heat of Salt Lake City, the temperature was now 15°C (59°F). Yikes!

Day 4: Stanley

IMG 3778

IMG 3779Living never was this simple. Going to the post office? It’s across the street. Need a drink? It will take you 24 seconds (in a car). The library? 5 more seconds, as is the bakery and restaurants. The small town of Stanley lives up to its reputation no matter what that reputation is. And the view is fantastic.

We stayed at the Sawtooth Hotel which also have a restaurant, a bakery down the street, and a great view of the Sawtooth mountains. Price for our room was 70$ included tax. Great price, especially when compared to other lodging alternatives in town.
